The coach who made these comments does not understand the game of hockey, does not understand the rules of hockey, and certainly does not follow the spirit of the game.
The video in and of itself is not shocking. Whenever you get young adults competing in a contact sport tempers easily flare and emotions rule the day. The only difference between this happening in China vs Canada is probably the discipline handed out following the game. I don't know what, if anything, happened to these players, but in Canada they would have been suspended for varying amounts of time. The guy throwing sucker punches would face a ban of a year or more.
The most shocking part of this whole thing is the comments of acceptance to the video. Fighting is not acceptable in hockey and it is not allowed or legal. This is why anyone who does fight receives a penalty and in minor hockey and amateur hockey throughout the world is ejected from the game.
While fighting such as this may have been acceptable 30 years ago, it is not acceptable today. Coaches, players, parents, officials, and people of influence in the game have made these changes happen and those who have refused to change have been left behind and are no longer connected to the game.
Any coaches who believe fighting is a tactic or strategy are out of touch with the spirit and soul of the game and are doing your son or daughter a disservice.
Hockey is about teamwork and team spirit, about working hard and working together, about building strong and confident young men and women who understand that fear and intimidation are not the way to get things done on the ice, in the world or in life.
If our coaches and teachers are not smart enough to see the changes taking place and adapt our teaching methods, how can we ever expect the players to learn the right way to play and live.
